This_is_a_very_mellow_guitar_solo_from_an_underrated_guitarist.__I_wouldnt

quite_put_him_in_the_Leo_(Kottke)_and_Mike_(Hedges)_club,_but_hes_a

serious_power_picker_and_has_some_nice_original_stuff.__This_piece_is_off

"Instrument_Landing"_on_the_Universal_Master_Series_(UVLD-78000).__My

transcription_is_only_about_six_months_behind_my_promised_schedule,_and

wouldnt_have_been_possible_without_my_Mac_and_sound_editing_software_to

slow_things_down_while_I_plunked_along.__As_Tori_Amos_said_in_some_recent

liner_notes,_"...its_bitchin_what_these_things_can_do."

Preston_uses_lots_of_weird_tunings_-_this_one_goes_DADECD,_according_to_an

interview_in_Frets_magazine_a_bunch_of_years_back.__He_likes_to_use

esoteric_tunings.__Why?__Probably_to_make_it_tough_for_scrubs_like_me_to

transcribe_his_music._:-)_There_are_many_places_where_phrases_could_be

played_in_more_than_one_way.__I_have_tried_to_consider_hand_position_as

much_as_possible_and_stay_note-for-note;_in_some_of_the_dissonant_sections

this_gets_a_bit_rough,_but_I_think_this_is_pretty_faithful_to_the_original.

This_is_not_an_easy_piece_to_just_pick_up_and_play...__part_A,_in

particular,_is_very_free-flowing,_often_somewhat_dissonant,_and_in_no

particular_rhythm_that_I_can_tell.__Best_to_listen_to_it_if_you_can.__The

rest_is_in_a_very_regular_and_slow_waltz_rhythm.__Take_your_time.__Be

warned_that_there_are_a_few_fairly_gnarly_left-hand_stretches_in_this_piece

-_Im_pretty_sure_of_the_notes,_but_if_anyone_can_find_easier_ways_to

phrase_them,_Im_all_ears.

The_usual_notation_stuff_applies:_"^"_indicates_a_beat,_"h"_is_hammer-on,

"p"_is_pull-off,_"/"_is_slide,_""_is_a_harmonic_on_string_x_(there_are

two_of_these).__In_addition,_in_particularly_gnarly_left-hand_moves,_I_have

tried_to_indicate_how_I_fret_the_notes_with_the_not-really-classical

LEFT-hand_"i,m,r,l"_(index,_middle,_ring,_little)_indication_stacked_in_the

same_order_as_the_strings.__For_example,_the_notation:

whole_thing_and_slide_the_little_finger_to_the_tenth_fret.__Then,_finger

the_fifth_string,_third_fret_with_your_ring_finger_and_the_first_string,

third_fret_with_your_little_finger,_pull_your_little_finger_off_to_fret_the

first_string,_first_fret_with_your_index_finger,_and_finally_finger_the

fifth_string,_first_fret_with_your_middle_finger_(which_requires_a_bit_of_a

wrist_torque).__I_hope_this_notation_doesnt_unnecessarily_complicate

things_-_you_can_certainly_ignore_it_if_you_can_find_better_ways.__In_fact,

you_could_even_email_suggestions_to_me!

I_was_originally_going_to_break_it_up_into_repetitive_sections,_since

there_are_sections_that_sort_of_repeat,_but_there_are_some_very_slight

nuancial_(?)_differences_that_I_wanted_to_preserve.__The_"sections"_are,

for_the_most_part,_sixteen-measure_phrases,_section_A_being_the_only

exception.

This_is_a_fine_piece,_easy-_and_pleasant-sounding,_difficult_to_master_(I

sure_havent_yet),_and_certainly_worth_the_effort.__I_think_guitarists_of

all_levels_could_learn_from_this_piece.__Also,_it_was_a_hell_of_a_lot_of

work_to_transcribe.
